David Markus and Combo featured in BRW magazine

We are very proud to have been a member of the BRW Fast 100 list for three consecutive years (07, 08, 09). As a result of this achievement, David was recently featured in the ‘Emerging Companies’ section of the March 4th edition of BRW magazine.

This article, written by Anthony Sibilliin and titled Back Yourself to Win, explores how David ‘came back from the brink by refocusing and taking his own advice.’ Sibillin writes, ‘“Own what adds value; partner what’s important; and buy what’s common.” David Markus’s advice is followed by more than 100 small and medium enterprises that partner with his company Combo, which offers proactive IT maintenance informed by long-term strategic plans.

‘Combo earns a fee from each server and personal computer used to run them. These added up to $1.9 million in 2006-07, $2.4 million in 2007-08 and $2.7 million in 2008-09 – and put the Melbourne company on the BRW Fast 100 list in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

‘However, two years ago, this apparent success had come to mask a failure brought about, ironically, by Markus ignoring his own advice.’

The article goes on to explore David’s journey; outlining how he came to realize that he needed to focus on Combo’s core, and outsource the areas that are not Combo’s specialty.

As a result of this newfound clarity, David has revised Combo’s strategy, linking ‘Combo’s revenue to clients on steep growth trajectories.’ The business is now focused solely on, ‘knocking down technology barriers in the way of fast-growing businesses with at least 20 staff.’
